Vic Chestnutt - R.I.P.

I waited until I had a reliable source this time, but Vic Chestnutt has died at age 45.

I know that he was not exactly a local, but he had some local ties of late, performing with Guy Picciotto, among others quite often. He played at the Black Cat last October. Now, really bummed I missed the show.

You can read the New York Times article here.

Happy Trails Vic. Thanks for your music.

J.Robbins and Chris Walla go to Washington

Hey All-

Those who are not aware, Bob Boilen, a former producer at NPR's "All Things Considered" now has runs "All Songs Considered" which has a pretty wonderful series of podcasts available on iTunes. Some full concerts, interviews and "Tiny Desk Concerts" (small performances given at Bob's desk at NPR.

Well another of the arms is a show called "Project Song" where Bob brings a few folks together to create an original song and document the song writing process. John Davis and Laura Burhenn of Georgie James did this a while back. You can find that here.

Well the latest installment brought Chris Walla from "Death Cab For Cutie" with DC's own J. Robbins (Gov't Issue, Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels etc.) and to no small extent Darren Zentek (Kerosene 454, Oswego, Channels). You can read about it here, and there are links on the page to watch the video.

UPDATE: The piece ran today on "All Things considered" and the interview is now linked off the same page.

OK, not DC centric.....

But probably all of us have been a victim of, or known a band who has had all their gear stolen. Well, it just happened to Poison the Well. It was after the first night of their tour. Anyway, they have pulled up their boot straps and found a way to keep going, but they are selling limited edition t-shirts to help ease the financial pain of having to rent a van, and get new gear.

you can find all the info here.

If you are feeling generous, buy a shirt, help a band.

Showlist for July 17th 2009

Hey all-

Busy week. Lots going on. Fort Reno on Monday was great. Poor But Sexy is one fun band. You should check them out.

While on the Fort Reno topic I should mention why you should all go to "Run For Cover" this year at the Black Cat. Why, you ask? Well, I'm glad you asked. This year it is a benefit show for Fort Reno, so we can have it again next year. Fun show, and for a good cause. Good karma will come to those who attend.

When is it? Another good question. It is on August 1st, and only cost $10.

On another note, it turns out that 90's DC Hardcore stalwarts Worlds Collide are re-uniting for a show in September with Hatebreed and the Cromags at the Rock n' Roll Hotel. I was pretty sure they were never going to talk to each other again. So it goes.

Never say never I guess......

Funny local nugget

So i get the weekly email from Revelation Records, which give me the update on some news, and what is the new stuff they got in this week. They also include a "Fun Fact" every week. This week it hit home a bit: it was about the minor dust up between two local bands going by the name "Fury". The one most people know is the band that included Jason Farrell of Swiz, Bluetip, etc. The other included Brian McTernan (Ashes, Salad Days Studios), and Ken Olden (Worlds Collide, Damnation A.D., Better than 1000). Well, I let the folks at RevHQ sum it up.

REVHQ FUN FACT
---------------
Did you know that former Revelation Records recording artists
Battery were originally called Fury? It's true. Around the
summer of 1990 in the Washington, DC area, hardcore upstarts Ken
Olden, Brian McTernan (a.k.a. "Brian Fury") and others were
playing in a band called Fury and even released a demo under
this moniker. Coincidentally, some veterans of the DC hardcore
scene (including Jason Farrell, Shawn Brown and Alex Daniels
from Swiz along with Lunch Meat/ Ignition's Chris Thomson) were
also doing a band called Fury. So before the release of their
first 7", Ken Olden, Brian McTernan and crew decided to change
their name to Battery to avoid any confusion (and to pay tribute
to the Metallica song of the same name). Brian McTernan's older
brother Mike released the 7" on his label, Deadlock Records. And
on the matrix of the 7", Battery sent a parting message out to
that competing band, claiming that while they may have changed
their name to Battery, they were the real Fury.

good times....

Showlist for July 3rd, 2009

Hey all-

Happy 4th weekend and all that. Don't burn anything down. How many years are they gonna show that video of the mannequin strapped to an M80 getting blown apart? I get it. Explosion bad.

So, apparently, former local and D Plan frontman Travis Morrison is retiring from music. Pitchfork has it here. He states it himself here. Never one to be boring, I guess.

Another sign of the corporate-ti-zation of punk music. Yahoo! music made a list of the 25 best ever Punk rock logos. You can find it here. For those who don't really care, Minor Threat came in 19th with the Sheep logo.

Oh, well, be safe this weekend. Also, Artomatic closes on Sunday. Last chance to see it before it comes down.

Showlist for June 26th 2009

Hey all-

Odd week. First, big Ed, then Farrah and then MJ. Bummer. The biggest for me was The King of Pop. Not too mention, it was the most sudden. For better or worse, he was my generation's Elvis for sure. Paste Magazine actually had an interesting piece on Michael here.

Anyway, Fort Reno started this past Monday. Hope you all can make it to a show or two this summer. Always a good time.

Also, if you like punk rock fury, go check out Pup Tent at Artomatic tomorrow night.

Alright, bed time. Read Clark's poem if you have not already.
